Spotify: Frequency (general)

Project type

Music Editorial

Date

2020 - 2023

Role

Editorial Lead, Black Music + Culture

As Spotify’s Editorial Lead for Frequency, the dedicated franchise for Black Music, the intention with the editorial strategy was to amplify and dedicate more resources to Black Artists on and off the platform. Categorized into 3 important sections:

Local/ Regional: “Around The Way”
Global/ Diasporic Reach: “Across The World; and
Genre Diversity: “We Everywhere”

I wanted people to see this and see themselves at a local and global level and understand that w/o explanation… because, if you don’t get it, it may not be fore you.

Frequency’s 3 music editorial flagship playlists were:
This is Frequency: New Music Friday for Black Artists across genres
Frequency represents the vibration that Black art emits throughout culture across music genres and beyond. As flagship, the “This is Frequency" playlist will shine a light on the latest from our favorite new releases making waves, every week.

Ripple Effect: Independent, Unknown, Unsigned, +Regional Genres
Unknown, Unsigned, and Artists from underserved genres, frequently influence the sound of mainstream music. Through thoughtful curation, substantive storytelling, and strong partnerships, Ripple Effect aims to uplift these Artists by exposing them to new fans from a regional scope.

House Party: Culture Leaders
House Party pays homage to those who’ve led the cultural shift of the Black experience in nightlife; expanding from local parties to massive festivals. Collaborating w/ groups who’ve created community in spaces where they didn’t exist before; we’re keeping the party going, from home.

And w/ an important focus on uplifting new, developing, and independent Black artists from a US regional scope; Ripple Effect playlists were dedicated to amplifying the DMV, Bay Area, Texas, the Midwest, Pacific Northwest, and New England. An homage to Carl Cherry whose similar effort at Apple opened the door for me as a curator early on in my career in music.

I worked w/ a team of insanely sharp Black Women, most immediately Kimberly Summers on Artists + Partnerships, and Francine Tamakloe on Marketing - could not have done this without these women.

We were most excited to open the door for people who otherwise might not have been able to get through. And amplifying under served regional sub-genres that often are the ripple that creates the wave
